The Bell Jar 1 test facility is a 0.5 m diameter by 0.7 m tall stainless-steel bell jar vacuum system. The chamber is evacuated with a Varian VHS-6 diffusion pump which is mechanically backed by an Alcatel 2033 SD rotary vane pump. An uncooled optical baffle prevents oil from back-streaming into the chamber. The diffusion and backing pumps have pumping speeds of 2400 l/s (on air) and 8.33 l/s, respectively. Pressure in the chamber is measured by a Bayard Alpert 571 ion gauge in connection with a SenTorr ion gauge controller. A 6″ 3-axis Orton MX80S motion table system inside the chamber allows for spatial sweeps of diagnostic instruments.
